Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest – Competition Mathematics Preparatory Course

Raffles Institution has once again the privilege to organize and train another team of primary school students to represent Singapore in next year's competition in Hong Kong. Their objective in organizing the above competition is to enable primary school students to have the opportunity to participate in more international and overseas mathematics competitions. Through this event, they hope to provide teachers and students a platform for interaction and exchange of mathematics knowledge, both locally and overseas.

Details of the competition will be given in Jan 2008 and registration will begin then. However, to allow students and teachers to better prepare for the competition, Raffles Institution would be inviting schools to subscribe to their Competition Mathematics Preparatory Course. This would provide students the opportunity to attempt selected questions from their past year competitions and receive solutions for the questions.

Lasallians who are interested to subscribing to their Competition Mathematics Preparatory Course, please study the details below.

Competition Mathematics Preparatory Course

The Competition Mathematics Preparatory Course is jointly developed by Raffles Institution and our IT and pedagogy partner, HeyMath! This is an on-line module aimed at helping teachers and students prepare for the Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest.
The module consists of selected questions from past Primary Mathematics World Contests organized by RI. It consists of a series of 5 modules in competition Mathematics, namely Geometrical Problems, Calculation Problems, Counting Problems, Arithmetical Problems and Investigative Problems.
Students may access the course independently from home or school. Students get to attempt the questions and full solutions are given for all questions making this ideal for independent learning. The learning progress and performance can be tracked.

Year End Class Party

The class party was held on a Tuesday (13th Nov) and it was great fun. It was kind of like a mini-potluck whereby every pupil contributed some stuff to the party.

It was only after 2 rounds of selecting their food that I remembered that I had forgotten to take a video of everyone's contribution towards the party. As seen from the video, most of the contribution were tidbits naturally as it is what most kids enjoy. To be honest, I was pretty scared that the pupils might suffer from a stomachache the next day.

We even had a movie screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which was contributed by Aloysius Tan. I guess most of the class enjoyed the movie, especially the very "special scene". =)

Primary 5 Level: Web Designing Project

Over the last one week holiday break, you had attended the workshop on designing web pages using Dreamweaver software and were taught skills on:
· Creating site map
· Creating directories (images)
· Manipulating text (Changing colours, font type and size)
· Creating flash buttons
· Creating tables
· Inserting images
· Creating hyperlinks to internal pages

· Uploading to an external site

In this school term, all P5 Lasallians will be making use of their newly acquired web designing skills to create their individual websites.
Below are the details:
1) Choose and research an animal which you have seen at the zoo or at the bird park. (Refer to English Course Book Page 65)
2) Find out about the animal's habitat, diet and behaviours.
3) Create a website of at least 4 pages:
- Home page. Within the home page, you should state the animal that you want to be, the positive and negative points of this animal and lastly the reasons why you had chosen this animal. (Refer to English Activity Book Page 65)

- Habitat page. Within the habitat page, they should research on the habitat of the animal of your choice.

- Diet page. Within the diet page, they should research on the diet of the animal of your choice.

- Behaviours page. Within the behaviours page, they should research on the behaviour of the animal of your choice.
4) Upload your web pages to an external web server (www.fortunecity.com or www.geocities.com)
5) Post up your website URL onto AskNLearn forums. This will allow your friends and teacher to view your website.

De La Salle School Charity Walk & Family Day on 29th September 2007

In the latest parent notification letter, you are informed of the above-mentioned event. For the benefit of those who had lost their parent notification letter or have not read it, below are the details:

Purpose of Event:
De La Salle School is proud to support Gawad Kalinga (GK), a non-government organisation in the Philippines which helps poor children in the shanty town of Baseco.

Gawad Kalinga means “To Give Care” in tagalog, and aptly describes their dedication in providing education, housing and food for the poor. Please visit www.gawadkalinga.org for more information.

This Charity Walk is a fundraising initiative led by our Christian Brothers’ School (CBS), and aims to raise more than S$30,000 among all CBS schools. President SR Nathan has presented Gawad Kalinga $31, 000 (1 million peso) on 14 Feb 2007 on behalf of CBS. Funds will support a breakfast scheme and an education programme for children and building shelters for families. Our target contribution is S$5000, raised through a participant’s donation of $5 per person (adult/child). Your support in this worthy cause will be deeply appreciated.

The Charity Walk & Family Day is a programme organised in line with our school’s character development value of initiative.

All Lasallians and their families are invited to join in the 2km walk at West Coast Park (WCP) Car Park 3, near MacDonald’s. A fun-filled Family Day will follow after the morning walk.

The Web Design Workshop will be held on this coming one week holiday break. Every Lasallian will undergo a 4 hour workshop session on either Monday (3rd September) or Tuesday (4th September).

Printed on the consent forms are the allocated workshop day and time slot which you will need to attend. Below are the finer details of what you should expect in this workshop.

Course Title: Webpage Designing Using Dreamweaver
Course Objective: Creating webpages on various places of interest or travel destinations
Course Content:
- Planning and creating a site map (planning creating various directories to store images, videos, sound, files, etc)
- Creating at least 3 HTML pages
- Creating tables
- Adding buttons
- Adding both internal and external hyperlinks
- Adding and manipulating text (bold, underline, colour, fonts, etc)
- Inserting images
- Uploading and publishing webpages to an external server (www.fortunecity.com)

National Day Performance @ DLSS

After many endless rehearsals over the past few days, it was a beautiful ending to the NDP performance put up by the P5 Lasallians. The atmosphere within the hall was incredible and the National spirit was heart-warming. One could only feel proud to be a Singaporean!

It was a job well done. The performance was great and there were compliments coming from both teachers and pupils! Well done to all P5 Lasallians!

The success of this NDP performance not only goes out to the performers but to the whole of the P5 cohort. Creating a performance of such a magnitude and scale was really beyond what we had all dreamt of initially.

Many Lasallians were heavily involved in different aspects of creating this performance. We have:
1) Many artistic Lasallians who spent countless hours creating the elaborate and realistic props.
2) Many physically fit Lasallians who took the task in providing logistics support for the moving of props.
3) The AV crew led by Mr. Hardi to handle the audio and visual aspects.
4) Many Lasallians who coordinated perfectly in the finale by singing and dancing to the flow of the music! That really helped in raising the spirits of the audience.

Once again, the P5 teachers would like to thank everyone who had contributed in one way or another in making this NDP performance a success! =)

P5 Science Club: Junior Gallery Guide Workshop

For the past two Fridays, 20 P5 Science Club members undergone training at the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research to be junior gallery guides.

Students benefited greatly as they were exposed to the various aspects of the fauna and flora of the Southeast Asian region within the Museum. The Raffles Museum houses both preserved specimens and miniature living displays.

Besides the knowledge attained in this workshop, students were trained to be junior gallery guides. They had to be familiar with the contents of the exhibits in order to effectively present to their audience. This also helped them in gaining the experience and confidence in public speaking.

Electrical Circuits

For Term 3, the focus of our Science learning will be on the topic of electricity. Thus, I strongly urge all of you to seek your parent's help in getting yourself a simple set of electrical components.

A basic electrical set-up will consist of:
1) Wires with crocodile clips
2) Bulbs
3) Batteries
4) Bulb holders
5) Battery holders
6) Switches

It's the beginning of the term 3 and there seem to be quite a lot of work to be done. Let me just summarise what is to be done and the datelines to be met.

1) IPW Hydroponics Reflection - Reflection to be done within AskNLearn forums. The dateline is on 8th July 2007 (Sunday).

2) English Homework 5B - To complete Review 1. Tear out page 21 to 38. You do not need to do the situational writing. The dateline is on 3rd July 2007 (Tuesday).

3) English Spelling - Creative Writing Book (page 50, 51, 121 and 122). Spelling for next week will be conducted on 3rd July 2007 (Tuesday).

4) Travel Brochure - To research on a particular travel destination and write a travel brochure. I will create a special folder in the AskNLearn forums for you guys to post up your write-ups. Your write-up must include these points:

Holidays in Malaysia

Many of you must be wondering why this blog isn't updated for the past week. =) Last week was very enjoyable and I had spent time with my family on a trip to Penang and Genting.

The food over at Penang was heavenly. I have an auntie over there and she made the time to bring us around Penang island on a food adventure. We didn't go to any fanciful restaurants but instead visited roadside stalls and coffee shops. We spent a total of 3 days and 2 nights over at Penang and visited many tourists attractions such as Penang Hill, Youth Park, Snake Temple, Penang Bridge, Kek Lok Si Temple, etc.

Over at Genting, we spent 4 days and 3 nights there. It was more of a relaxation trip whereby we laze around enjoying the cool air. I didn't manage to take much photos as I was more into taking videos. I feel that videos are better able to capture the sights, sounds and emotions of the surrounding.

It's been more than a week since Heuristics Quiz 1 was released. About a quarter of Class 5C had attempted the quiz and the average marks for the class is around 4 out of 6. Click here to view the detailed breakdown.

For problem 2 and 3, I had captured my working and voice using the tablet PC. Thus you will be able to actually see how I go about to solve the problems, together with hearing my "soothing" explanations. Do enjoy. =)

Problem 1:
Some digits in a subtraction sum have been replaced by letters P and Q. What could the letter P be?

Solution to Problem 1:
Use trial and error method.
P = 9 and Q = 5

Around the World in Eighty Days

Yes, the holidays are here and most of your families might actually be planning for an overseas trip. Next term will be an extremely exciting one, especially in the area of English language.

We are going to be experiencing a literature programme! You might be having lots of questions right now as to what exactly this literature programme might entail. Rest assured. You will definitely not be disappointed by the series of events planned for you.

Let me explain a little more in detail what this literature programme is all about. In this literature programme, all Primary 5 Lasallians will be reading a literature book titled, "Around the World in Eighty Days". I believe some of you had read it. For those who had not, don't worry. You can actually read the online version during your spare time during this holiday. Click here to access the online version of the book.

Once you are familiar with the book, your learning in areas of grammar, vocabulary, cloze passage, comprehension and composition will revolve around this book. At the end of the whole literature programme, every Primary 5 class will have to put up a performing item. This performing item could be a rendition, drama, talk show, etc.

To allow you to have a better idea of what the end product should turn out to be like, I had uploaded some examples up on youtube.com.

Math Olympiad Quiz 1

Please attempt the above-mentioned quiz in AskNLearn.com. The questions in this quiz are very challenging. You are given 25 minutes to solve 5 questions and you are given a maximum of 3 attempts. I will be keeping track of the marks and names of pupils who had tried out the quiz. Enjoy! =)

Selling of Hydroponics Vegetables

Last friday, I was armed with a video camera in order to record down the "special moments" of pupils selling their hydroponics vegetables. I captured many interesting moments showing how pupils were trying to promote their vegetables. I could really see a lot of them showing much potential as aggressive and innovative sales persons. =)

I had edited the video and uploaded to youtube.com. I had to keep the video size small so that it will be easier and faster for pupils to view the video. However, a smaller video size also means that the quality of the video might not be as good.

For class 5C, I will burn out a VCD of the whole IPW project once we are done with the presentation portion in term 3. The quality of the video will definitely be much better. =)

Recommended Assessment Books

Many parents had asked me what Maths or Science assessment books will be good for their children to do, especially since the holidays are coming. My personal preference will be the below-mentioned books:

1) Problem-Solving Processes in Mathematics 5A/5B (Fabian Ng)

2) Science Building Up process Skills 5 (Casco Publications Pte Ltd)

3) Science Companion Primary 5 (Renee Chong)

I will like to clarify that I am in no way related to these authors or publishers and they are just assessment books that I prefer to use now, base on my personal preference. It is also not compulsory to buy these assessment books. =)

Sony Creative Toy Award

The Sony Creative Science Award is a competition for primary school children in Singapore. The theme every year has been "Creative Toys" and this year our school is taking part in the Whizkid Award category. Toys made in this category must invovle the use of magnetic motion.

The P5 Science Club managed to churn out 3 "Creative Toys". Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best! =)

PSLE Oral Preparation

Chanced upon a very useful video that helps you guys to prepare for your PSLE oral. Arrr.. you might be thinking, "PSLE is still so far away, why so kiasu!"

I guess its better to be prepared now than to be all jittery when the time really comes. Time really flies and before you know, you are already sitting for your PSLE and might actually be searching for this useful clip which you vaguely remember me sharing. =)

Therefore, do take a look at the video clip as it gives you many useful tips on some dos and don'ts during the examination in an entertaining way.

Fun @ Changi Beach

It was an enjoyable day spent at Changi Beach. We set off from school at around 9am and reached Changi Beach at around 10pm. It was a long bus journey and most of the pupils were extremenly excited (judging based on the amount of noise created within the bus).

Upon reaching Changi Beach, half an hour was spent on having our "picnic". It rained just before we arrived and the ground was wet. None of my pupils brought along any picnic mats and most of them resorted to eating while standing. =)

The next half an hour was spent collecting rubbish along the shoreline. There were many interesting rubbish collected but I shan't say much. Hopefully, you guys out there can contribute and comment on what rubbish you had collected.

The last half an hour was spent observing the near edge of the beach for any seashells, organisms or animals that could be found there. Time was spent taking photos and as usual the boys were up to mischief, throwing stones into the poor ocean.

Okay, enough of "talking". Lets view some wonderful pictures which I had taken on that day. =)
